Evolution in Human-ary Thought

Salut Mes Amis!!!

Okay so far I have been quite tame on my blog. Not really discussing some of the more... shall we say... complex topics that I have been itching to write about. But ... there is a time and place for everything... now is that such time and my use of this blog will be that such place.

I think all of the time - sometime so much I am often unable to sleep. My brian never stops and that can become somewhat of an annoyance. I often ponder about the time we are living in - the advances in technology we have been witnessed to in the last ten years alone - never mind in the last thirty years. One of the major advancement we have witnessed is the access to information. This may seem to reflect a very simple thing... Truly it is not! I remember thirsting for knowledge as a child - always wanting to know EVERYTHING. Sincerely, this passion clings to me even today. When I wanted to know something as a child my only references I had available are now considered a more traditional way of learning - from my parents, teachers, peers, and libraries. Now we have an overload of information - so much in fact that currently there is no way to be able to process it all (perhaps in the future...). I remember first jacking into the internet. All it was, was a dark screen with a blinking cursor where you were able to type to see if there way anyone else out there. How far we have come from that point! Now I spend countless hours researching anything I desire. If I want to know "it" all I need to do is "google" it. But what does all of this mean? Where are we going as a collective species with access to so much information - which I might add - has never happened in history before. The advances in open and easily accessible information has also spurred an augmentation in the advances of science (quantum physics), technology (nano), media (wikileaks), and social interaction (Facebook). But have all of the new tools that are available to society really brought about the ability for humanity to evolve or to become more enclosed to an ignorant way of thinking? I think this is a valid question...

Let's first take a look at quantum physics... Have an of your been exposed to the book/movie called "The Secret"? It takes from the quantum theory that there is an infinite number of possibilities and we are the ones who create our own reality based on the possibility we focus in on the most. Now, obviously it is a lot more complex than that but for the sake of this blog we will leave it at that for now. The Secret builds its position on the power of attraction - what you want in your life can be willed into being. Is this really true or even ethically correct? Yes - there are always morales involved. From my own opinion - The Secret is based on a more superficial level... yes it is getting the message out there that we have more control if we are able to focus out thoughts, although, at the same time the premise is based more on the material aspects of our existence. The idea of the rule of attraction which is not necessarily what quantum physics is leading our evolution towards. Just because you "want something or someone" does not necessarily mean you will be able to obtain it/them just with a concentrated thought on the power of attraction. Even if this was the case, do you want someone in your life just because you willed it to be or would you rather someone be in your life because the truly appreciate who you are? Furthermore, we could also consider the idea that we have the individual thought (the micro) and the collective thought (the macro). How does our ability to pursue the idea of the law of attraction without any consideration of the collective? If you tell someone you want something specific (for example - to stop smoking), how many people that you tell with reflect doubt of your ability to do so in their own thoughts? There is a movie called "What the Bleep do we Know?" this is a good movie for the basics of quantum physics yet... it still leaves something lacking - leading to further questions.

Ok... so the second point I indicated as an evolutionary process for humanity is technology. Are we truly reviewing the exponential growth of how technology is developing and being adopted by the general consensus? The technology I specifically indicated earlier was nanotechnology. This is an exciting new technology of which we are still unaware of the unintended consequences that it could possibly lead to. There are many areas of which this technology could and probably will be applied to including medicine, sustainable energy, robotics.... But what does exactly is this technology? It is a micro-technology that has unlimited possibilities. It can be used and has already been tested in the therapeutic aspect of health in animals. Creation of white robotic blood cells is another advance in health-care nanotechnology. Further to this is the internal interaction of nanotechnology in brain functions. Would the use of nanotechnology actual permit the ability to use a higher percentage of the brain and its functions? Currently there is ongoing research to reverse engineer the brain in order to understand how it operates. How will the implementation of nanotechnology in brain function alter how we view reality? Additionally, how will nanotechnology integrate us further into the virtual reality? We still don't know and will not know how this expansion in human intelligence will alter how we view life now and in the future. Will we continue to have individual thought processes or will we come closer to a singularity into the collective? If we create a more collective thought process will this also lead to less war, famine, disease, or will we be operating as a collective of the Borg on Startrek without the function to be able to think for ourselves? Furthermore, will this lead to an inability to live the experiences as we do now? If so, will we lose our sense of individuality?

I have briefly touched upon the augmentation in technology in two specific arenas, of which, are briefly depicted here. I will leave you with these pervasive thoughts and questions for now... Stay tuned for part 2 - a focus on the progression of media and social interaction apparatus. Thank you for taking the time to read these words - possibly digesting them and creating further questions of your own. I look forward to any thoughts, comments, and/or questions you feel comfortable enough to post.

Urban Homesteading

Salut Mes Amis,

Another year has come and gone - the tears and laughter will shine on :) So I started my AeroGarden today and I am terribly excited!! I only used it once last winter and wanted to modify it and try it again. I found that the air pump that is build into the apparatus gets bogged down with roots once the plants are more established. This time I invest a couple dollars on an air pump, tubing, and an air stone - using this extra air source will ensure the water is circulating properly instead of becoming stagnant. the first time I used it - I planted extra large cherry tomatoes. This time, I am growing 2 green pepper plants and 1 basil plant. They should start to sprout in 7-12 days :) I'm anticipating seeing the plants grow and produce yummy edibles. As I have mentioned in one of my previous blogs - sprouting is another awesome way to grow your part of your food supply while benefiting from all of the nutrients they hold (with a punch!!) and you can do it easily year round.

Another aspect I really like about this type of technology (hydroponic) is the benefits that accompany it. First, I like growing plants. I have owned plants ever since I can remember. One of the plants I have now is even older than I am!! Therefore, I think you can understand how important I believe plants are. They help clean the air we breath, they give our bodies nourishment that we need, and they create humidity to help moisturize our skin. Second, the lights that are used help elevate depression - if you live in a location (such as I do) where there are long periods of short days and hence less vitamin D - the lights are of a spectrum that helps combat the lack of natural sunlight. This is not only for us though (and our pets) but also good for the other household plants that are located nearby. Third, it works as a great conversational piece that is able to lead to a conversation of many things. People always asked me last time what made me think to invest in such a thing. It was a simple answer - it's brilliant. I get to see something grow, eat what it produces, be happier because of the extra light, and it looks awesome too!!

Okay so now you are probably thinking, "is that it?!?!? Is that ALL she is doing as her urban homesteading????" Of course my answer would be, "non silly ... not at all."

Since I have been blessed with a large yard I now have the space I need to create the yard I've wanted for some time. Every house I have owned - I have also always had a garden. I have a difficult time growing anything in my garden that is for cosmetic use only (grass and inedible flowers). Every year I add new Items to the garden that also become self-sustaining (perennials) such as fruit trees, berry bushes, herbs, and so forth. This past summer my new additions include lavender, a sour cherry tree, an apple tree, and some parsley. I have also started drafting blueprints of how I will be expanding my garden space for my annual plants such as carrots, peas, swiss chard, tomatoes, and so on... lol!!! Of course I will also be adding more perennials in the form of herbs and fruit trees :) For the annual beds I am thinking about building raised beds for practicality reasons - raised beds are easier to weed and also easier to control the chances of soil contamination (or as much as possible anyway).

Additionally, I have been researching how to build a cold storage which will prove to be somewhat challenging as the grade of my yard is quite level to the house in the back. Therefore, it will be a matter of retaining walls and bobcats :-S I have also been trying to find municipal, provincial, and federal grants and programs for alternative renewable sources of energy. If you have any suggestions - Please, Please, Please let me know (thank you in advance)!!!

Lastly, I am purging my home of anything that is clutter and pointless. I have way too many clothes so that is what I am attacking first - and I will be donating many...oh yes... many items LOL. The tools and books are staying though ;)

In order for there to be room for something new we must first clear the space for it to enter... If we only look after one's own self-interests... it will be all that will suffer including oneself.

Food Heals

salut mes amis,

So the new year has gotten under way and with a new year can come a new you. Not in the sense that I want to "change" who I am but to become a better me or a me from long ago.. which one I'm still not so sure. I once said - you are who you always were and will be what you had been before - hence my new/old outlook on food.

In order to fully appreciate what I am about to share, there needs to be a little background history I include first. Food heals, this I absolutely know! You should feed your body what it needs in the purest form possible. The less ingredients the better and homemade is always the best. In this recession and being a student has led me back to the past I use to know. When I was a kid my mom made us everything - not just in the context of food - but even clothing right down to our socks!!! So thinking about injuries I am trying to heal from as a result of a car accident, being super broke, and always being conscientious of what I put in my body I started to think back to what my mom did when we were kids.

One thing I always enjoyed was the sprouts my mom would grow for us. In our Canadian climate and uncertainty in weather (is there going to be frost or not) and since in Alberta our last summer was horrible for our growing season - I thought what could I grow in my house that wouldn't take up huge amounts of room or take forever..... Then I remembered the sprouts!!!! It's so easy, they are so bloody good for you - did you know that broccoli sprouts are 30x better for you than actual full grown broccoli!?!?! - and it doesn't matter what time of year it is, you are able to have sprouts in about a week depending on your tastes and what type of seed you are sprouting. Now I could go on forever and tell you all the additional benefits that sprouts have like vitamins A, C, K blah blah blah but I wouldn't want to bore you all to death and youtube has great videos already posted waiting for your viewing on the matter. Why I am writing this is that by growing your own sprouts can save you cash - and a fair bit. I need fresh fruits and veggies every day so this was a no brainer for me. With only a couple of tablespoons of seeds you can have close to a pound of sprouts and food is getting more and more expensive. Not only that but I control the environment that the seeds are grown in. Since the seeds are organic (I don't suggest sprouting seeds that are not organic) and I know exactly how they have been grown I don't need to worry about additional chemicals being ingested into my body and I am also actively supporting an important sustainable industry that would leave a positive imprint on the earth rather than a negative one.

Now that I have started doing more research I was curious about what else my mom taught us that is a more traditional but healthy way to live and eat. So I don't really eat junk food - okok - I know yell at me now but I would much rather eat some fresh carrots or an apple than a bag of chips. This message isn't to preach and tell you not to enjoy the foods you like - maybe just think about them before you put them into your mouth. The easier it is to eat the more ingredients it probably has. That is not to say you are not able to make quick and healthy meals but normally we are thinking "I want this fast and I want what I am craving" aka fats and sugars. But that doesn't mean you can't still indulge yourself but maybe just cut back a bit - moderation - and don't feel guilty about it. We are taught to feel guilty about food yet food is so amazing how can we possibly feel guilty about enjoying it????

So through my research I have come across certain information that will allow you to optimize your health through the food you eat but will also provide you with flexibility within you eating lifestyle to adapt to your surroundings and indulge in you more sinful cravings.

1) Cabbage has gotten a bad rap!!!!! Cabbage is an amazing vegetable and should not be treated with such disrespect. I eat cabbage almost daily. I eat it raw, cooked - I don't care, I love love love cabbage. It has been documented that if you eat cabbage at least once a month it can help prevent colon cancer. A good friend of mine went through this painful disease and he eats cabbage almost every day and he wasn't even suppose to go into remission!!! Cabbage is also super yummy if cooked the right way and there are so many things you can do with cabbage aka like make cabbage rolls - soooo good!!! The other great thing about cabbage is that it is cheap!!! Yes I said it - cabbage will last like forever in your fridge (if you have a cold storage I am so jealous - but will keep in your cold storage forever as well) and you can always find it at a super low price. Make cabbage your friend!!!!

2) So what is the difference between animal fats and vegetable oils.... This is something new I came across and okay I will admit that about 70-80% of my diet is vegetarian - not vegan - but still mostly vegetarian with little to no bread, pastas, rice, potatoes etc. While I was surfing around I came across this youtube video talking about the foods you should not eat. One thing the lecturer pointed out was that animal fat coagulated at room temperature but vegetable oils don't. What this means is that the fat you ingest from the animal is not going to stay in a liquified form even at room temp. which is what your body temperature runs at normally. It is no wonder that if you eat too much meat you can have a serious problem with you heart since the fat isn't able to move around as freely in your system as what vegetable oil does. My suggestion would be to seriously think about the amounts of animal fats you are ingesting - there are many different option including switching over to a leaner meat such as buffalo. It is super lean but also extremely high in proteins and you should be able to find a local organic rancher.

3) Coconut oil is a God Send... what does this mean? Well the benefits of coconuts are amazing and again you can google or youtube it and find countless posts about it. So why is it so good for us.. well first of all it has a super high heat threshold this means that you can cook with it, bake with it etc and you will not convert that oil to having carcinogenics such as what happens if you heat extra virgin olive oil - I know I was super shocked about this too. Coconut oil can be taken plainly, added to smoothies, cooked with and it is amazing for you skin. My niece uses it to wash her face and has really helped her calm her acne and also fits within her vegan lifestyle. It is also great for the skin if it is dry or for your hair as a treatment! Not only can you use it for all of these things - it tastes great too - when you purchase it look for the purest and organic form you are able to.

4) Turmeric aka curry. Okay so many people complain that they can't even stand the smell of this spice but GET OVER IT ALREADY!!! This is such a good natural way to help ensure quality of life as you get older. It is said to help many different kinds of cancer including prostate and breast cancer (in reports it is claimed that indian people who consume this spice in just about every meal has 20 times less cases of prostate cancer than in North America, 6 times less cases of breast cancer, and also is claimed to prevent the onset of alzheimer's disease. It is stated that the average Indian person ingests 2-3 grams of this per day but if you eat turmeric and black pepper together it is stated that the black pepper increases its benefits by 2,000 times!!!!

Okay so there are some good pointers for those who would like to make some lifestyle aka foodstyle changes that doesn't cost a lot - actually they are all pretty cheap if you don't get into the hype of buying an electronic sprouter - be smart buy some mason jars and some stainless steel mesh and you will be on your way sprouting that same day - and is easy to start doing and adopting into a new healthier way to eat. All of these things I have written about was done with love not dictation - take it as you will. I really think the food we eat impact how we feel every day... Food for thought non?

Bises mes amis - I hope this helped and if you have any other pointers I would love to hear about it!!!

Adonis

It must have been nice,
It must have been swell;
thinking you were the Adonis of them all.

You lost yourself,
you lost your soul.
Now all you have -
is your complete lack of control,
control of your senses -
control of your life.

Lost in the youth of others,
take away their innocence.
Playing you silly games,
you lead them astray.

But you never met someone else,
in the mix of your deplorable mess -
emanating the strength you found within me...

... And when it came to be -
that you would finally see,
that being so selfish -
isn't what life is suppose to be.

You just laugh,
to play if off -
to you it was no big thing.
But underneath your facade of Adonis,
you carry with such pride,
was the realization -
you really are not a nice guy!

So maybe in the days to come,
you will take the time to see -
your Adonis persona,
meant absolutely nothing to me!

LOSS

Today is a sad day. Today brought the news of a friend lost. He was taken back to God. He was young and ambitious and loved to laugh. He was creative but strong and always stuck his ground. Rick cared even if he could not always tell you - but he loved and loved deeply. My tears stream down my face knowing I was not the friend I should have been. In the years that slowly took us further away to be brought back together through FB... but then still never to find the time to go down and just say 'hi'! This loss has brought me to the realization of the smaller things in life that tend to matter more than you care to admit. It has changed me but for the better. Thank you Rick for being lessons in my life with the passing of yours.

Helloooo Everyone,

Ok so it has been a week or so since I started this blog and I have been thinking about what my second ever posting would be about. So, I guess it will be about HONESTY. Yes I know it is really one of the last things people want to ACTUALLY talk about although we EXPECT everyone to be at least modestly honest with us.

So what has driven me to talk about honesty??? Well first of all... I am one of those people that can't help but to be brutally honest (as my mother would put it!!). So what is all the fuss about? Why does honesty have such a prevalent place in our thoughts? And I know you know exactly what I mean... always wondering what someone else is thinking and if you are EVEN brave enough to ask... are they REALLY being honest about what they tell you???

it seems that more and more in our complex emerging world, that we are constantly needing to weigh the validity of the statements we receive as inputs. Whether they are spoken or written we need to ensure what it is we are being told is actually truth in reality.

A prime example of how our markets have been flooded with FALSE statements.. we just need to turn to the diet industry. Herbal Life promotes products in order for their clients to be able to lose weight. In this day and age, this really isn't anything too excited. North American markets have played host to countless number of new and improved diet plans in order for people to be able to achieve their 'ideal weight' but can they really? Or is it just a dream that you are being sold? the power of being able to manipulate vocabulary entitles some to leverages of power they would not have otherwise been able to obtain. So maybe the question I really should be asking.. is why are we - as a human race in general - so bloody gulliable?
